Introduction

They exist defects no Bottle Washer shall never remove, whatever the duration of its cycles, the amount of caustic soda or temperature of the water.   Between these:

  • Paint, internal or external;
  • Scuffing;
  • Mineral ring.

This last a residual encountered all around the necks of the bottles: a mineralization adherent to the inner neck, distuinguishible by the red-oxide or grey colour. Bottles featuring a mineral ring, if not removed, should continue to recirculate in the loop between Washer machine and EBI outfeed toward Washer Machine.

Solution

It exists, however rarely applied to EBIs Worldwide, a specific inspection specialized for this type of defects.        It allows to classify these bottles to:

  • automatic destruction;
  • accumulation table.

Its operative principle is the same identical of the External Sidewall inspection. The Group of Ranges of Grey are associated to the Groups of Areas of Inspection in the zone of the bottle neck, so to acquire sensitivity to Mineral Rings, a sort of defect not easy to detect because of its position close to the neck. Mineral Ring inspection uses as input signal the same cameras of the External Sidewall inspection: a different algorithm (and, menus) process the images and allows to separate the defects to a rejector different than that returning to Bottle Washer, typically the destruction out feed.

Mineral ring is a residual encountered all around the necks of the bottles. A mineralization adherent to the inner neck, distuinguishible by the red-oxide or grey colour. It is quite commonly encountered  in those Breweries whose crates full of empties cannot be rapidly recirculated.  Bottles remaining months stopped into stores in open ambients like in the image visible here (SABMiller Zambia.  Mineral Ring Inspection adopts visible light like an instrument. Visible light 100 million times more energetic than Infrared and 100 times less energetic than, i.e. the X-rays used for the Fill Level, Case and Crate Inspections
