“...each one e-mail we exchange results scanned three consecutive times, using anti viruses by three different Vendors, continously and automatically updated”

New versions of existing viruses and malwares are continously and automatically created.  The gravity of the situation may be easily inferred clicking on each one of the anti-virus and malware logos aside, accessing their respective online Threat Centres.  Worse, today many viruses and malwares include mechanisms of self-reproduction with differences to reduce the probability to be detected.   And, most important, recent non-commercially-biased estimations for the true capability of the anti virus and malware softwares, based on the products of more than fifty Vendors, reduced those excessively confident "...99.9 % hit-rate” so commonly visible on antivirus' advertisements, to a truer 26 %.  Which means: three-quarters of the viruses and malwares are present and undetected.  Because of these reasons, and with the valuable experience of the methods used in the Bottling Quality Assurance to binary classify a defect, Graphene adopts a policy of redundancy in the control.  Each one e-mail we exchange results scanned minimum three times.   And, more relevant, scanned by mean of antivirus by different Vendors, continously updated, in:

  • the CloudFlare cloud data network;
  • the Servers based in the US;
  • our head office in Europe.

One of these softwares, ClamAV™, is nearly unknown out of Web Hosting Companies. It scans the Server that hosts this web site.  Clam AntiVirus is an open source (GPL) anti-virus toolkit for UNIX, designed especially for e-mail scanning on mail gateways.  It provides a number of utilities including a flexible and scalable multi-threaded daemon, a command line scanner and advanced tool for automatic database updates. The core of the package is an anti-virus engine available in a form of shared library.   Here down its main features, quoted by ClamAV™:

  • command-line scanner
  • fast, multi-threaded daemon with support for on-access scanning
  • milter interface for sendmail
  • advanced database updater with support for scripted updates and digital signatures
  • virus scanner C library
  • on-access scanning (Linux® and FreeBSD®)
  • virus database updated multiple times per day
  • built-in support for:
    • various archive formats, including Zip, RAR, Tar, Gzip, Bzip2, OLE2, Cabinet, CHM, BinHex, SIS and others;
    • all mail file formats;
    • ELF executables and Portable Executable files compressed with UPX, FSG, Petite, NsPack, wwpack32, MEW, Upack and obfuscated with SUE, Y0da Cryptor and others;

Another of these, intego® VirusBarrier, is produced by a Vendor exclusively devoted to the restricted market share of Apple’s Mac OS X.   A valuable addition to our countermeasures is provided by Fortinet®, a Palo Alto, California-based company and one of the world leaders in IT security.  Not one more company examining malwares and visuses, and studying solutions, rather a much bigger Vendor of IT security hardware and software in direct competition with Cisco®.  Its own network is based on a proprietary Operating System (FortiOS™).    Below, the online sight to the worldwide daily situation of the Botnets, as seen by Fortinet®:
